Schools of Choice Now Open for 2016-17 School Year
The Schools of Choice Program is now open for the 2016-17 school year. Written requests must be submitted by May 1, 2016 by returning the form to either district office or your child's school. A drawing will be held by June 15 for all requests received on or before May 1 for placement into each elementary building where openings exist. Requests received after May 1 will go into a second pool for a drawing to be held during the first week in August, with placements to occur only if openings exist. The form can be found here.
This spring we will begin the process of making elementary classroom placement decisions for the 2016-17 school year. We are fortunate to have an outstanding teaching and support staff. These professionals have the same goal you do - the best educational placement for each and every student. Placement of students is a complex process that we take very seriously. It is essential that each classroom be balanced in the areas of gender, academic ability, learning and social needs, behavioral characteristics, ethnic diversity, and class size. Your input, along with input from your child’s current teachers, will be carefully considered in making a placement decision for your child.
Our staff has a great deal of knowledge about your child and will use this knowledge in the process of placing students for next year. If you wish to share your own insight regarding your child’s specific education needs, please use the form provided with this letter and return it to me no later than Friday. May 20. It is very important that your input be received by this deadline so it can be considered as class lists are developed. When requesting a teacher for your child, please do not discuss your choice(s) with your child. Given the numerous considerations for student placement, your request for a certain teacher will be considered, but is not a guarantee, nor a promise. The final decision on all student placements rests with the principal after careful consideration of staff and parent input.
Visiting Author and Artist to Visit Oakview
We are thrilled to welcome a visiting author as well as a visiting artist to Oakview this spring. In conjunction with the Foundation for Excellence, and with additional support from our PTO, we look forward to having author and artist Gijsbert van Frankenhuyzen visit our building and meet students this May.
Gijsbert van Frankenhuyzen illustrated the book “The Legend of Sleeping Bear,” which has been honored as Michigan’s Official State Children’s Book. He is most proud of his Hazel Ridge Farm children’s book series, on which he collaborated with his wife Robbyn. These true stories, taken from years of caring for wild animals, are filled with his beautiful illustrations. Book order forms have gone home with students.
