High School

  Dollar amounts referenced below are estimations based off of previous projects, square footage dollar amounts, and conversations with contractors, architects, and engineers. These numbers do not reflect actual quotes or bids on projects.

The auto shop is a standalone structure located to the south of the high school. Currently there is no restroom facility within that space. The students and staff have to walk across a parking lot to access bathrooms inside the high school. Students must be trusted with a district access badge to enter the building unsupervised by staff. Students in this program come from multiple districts across the county and are not always SJPS students entering the high school.

SJPS has 8 different buildings with 8 different key sets. Over the decades of buildings being open, keys have been misplaced or lost. This results in security risks from keys potentially being out in the public. 

Rekeying the district to put all buildings on one key system will remove the existing security risks while simplifying the management of building access.


While the district intends to rekey the district, badge access is the primary method of access for employees. Not every heavily utilized exterior door has badge access, which imposes security risks due to being propped open as well as logging of access. The badge access allows for historical access logs to be viewed in the event of any concern.

The high school is equipped with two high mass water heaters that support the domestic water system of the building. One of these two water heaters were replaced in 2024 for $38,742. The second is now non-operational and needing replacement.

The high school water chiller was installed in 2010. Over the last 4 years the district has spent over $100,000 on maintenance and part replacement on the unit. The average life expectancy on a chiller is 15-20 years.

The high school boiler system was originally designed for 4 high mass boilers. In the 2020 energy project, 2 high efficiency boilers were added to support pool use and allow for the capability to shut down the 4 high mass boilers in non-heating months when there is lower demand for heat. In 2023 one of the four high mass boilers was decommissioned due to issues beyond repair. This boiler was replaced in the summer of 2025. In fall of 2025 one of the other high mass boilers remaining in the system failed due to tank and coil leaks that were unrepairable. The bond will replace this most recent failed boiler.

The auxiliary gyms in the Middle School and High School are the only areas in the district that do not have cooling. These three locations are the most frequently used spaces across the district, both during and after school, for PE classes and extracurricular activities. These spaces house many games, practices, and community events. 

In addition to the comfort for users of the space, the uncontrollable high temperatures and added humidity in the spaces causes many maintenance and upkeep issues such as:

  • Warping of the floors
  • Humidity/condensation on the playing surfaces
  • Humidity caused paint and corrosion of materials in the spaces
  • Corrosion and shortening of lifespan on motors for lifts (wrestling mats, basketball hoops, baseball net lifts)

In the majority of the classrooms around our district, desks, tables, and chairs are worn and damaged. We have equipment that is not conducive to today's learning environment and are mismatched which does not provide a consistent learning space for all students. The district has extended the life on many pieces of classroom furniture by replacing and welding parts while also swapping between buildings to create complete classroom sets.

The district intends to replace classroom furniture sets with the 2026 bond.

The high school parking lot was installed in the 2010 bond. There was initially very little maintenance and upkeep on the lots causing greater need for repairs and replacement. Over the past 7 years the district has implemented a plan across the district to do the routine maintenance required to protect and extend the life of our parking lots. This includes crack filling, seal coating, and backfilling around drives to support the structural integrity of the lot. Due to the age and condition of the lot, it needs to be replaced.

Variable frequency drives (VFD) are attached to every air handler unit/rooftop unit across the district.

A VFD is an electronic device used to control the speed and torque of a motor by varying the frequency and voltage of the power to the motor. In short, the VFD saves energy and reduces costs by not having a unit run at full capacity when called to run.

The chiller pump circulates the water around the building, supplying the units that are connected to the chiller for cooling. Two circulation pumps are in sequence to complete this job, and one is currently inoperable.

The main drain line that runs north out of the high school to Sickles St. needs to be replaced. Over the last two years we have had multiple backups caused by breaks and bellies in the line.

Air handler units (AHUs) are motor driven units that supply air to various locations across the building. 


The locker room will be configured to allow for more private shower and changing spaces.

Due to the lack of cooling and increased humidity in the auxiliary gym, ceiling tiles, grid, and auxiliary equipment need to be replaced. 

The woodshop has a centralized dust collecting system that is designed to support the usage of all machines in the space and keep the air quality sufficient for classroom use. With the addition of equipment to the space, the current dust collector can no longer support current capacity. 

The metals shop is used for a variety of operations. Currently there are pieces of equipment that are stationed in less than ideal locations due to the limited accessibility of the space. The intent of the renovations would be to widen and raise the doorway separating the main workshop from the finish room. This would allow for the CNC machine to be protected within an enclosed location. Also, by moving this machine from its currently location it would make room for additional welding booths.
