Middle School

SJPS has 8 different buildings with 8 different key sets. Over the decades of buildings being open, keys have been misplaced or lost. This results in security risks from keys potentially being out in the public. 

Rekeying the district to put all buildings on one key system will remove the existing security risks while simplifying the management of building access.

The auxiliary gyms in the Middle School and High School are the only areas in the district that do not have cooling. These three locations are the most frequently used spaces across the district, both during and after school, for PE classes and extracurricular activities. These spaces house many games, practices, and community events. 

In addition to the comfort for users of the space, the uncontrollable high temperatures and added humidity in the spaces causes many maintenance and upkeep issues such as:

• Warping of the floors
• Humidity/condensation on the playing surfaces
• Humidity caused paint and corrosion of materials in the spaces
• Corrosion and shortening of lifespan on motors for lifts (wrestling mats, basketball hoops, baseball net lifts)

The middle school classroom hallway floors were replaced in 2024. However, classroom carpet has not been replaced in over 25+ years. Many of these carpeted surfaces are stained, torn, or worn to due heavy traffic and use.

Due to the lack of cooling and increased humidity in the auxiliary and main gyms the paint and structural beams have corroded and deteriorated over time. These areas need to be sandblasted and repainted to protect the beams and stop the current paint and rust from falling to the floors. This goes hand in hand with adding cooling to these locations.

A majority of the door frames and hardware across the district are original to their respective buildings. Many at this point are over 50 years old and are worn, rusted, and require frequent maintenance to ensure operability and security.

The middle school water heater is original to the building which was constructed in 1996. It is well past its useful life and is requiring more frequent maintenance and upkeep on the unit.

The current classroom lab stations are not adequate for classroom instruction and do not provide ADA accessibility. This project includes replacing the lab stations in each science classroom to better meet the needs of students and staff. 

In the majority of the classrooms around our district, desks, tables, and chairs are worn and damaged. We have equipment that is not conducive to today's learning environment and are mismatched which does not provide a consistent learning space for all students. The district has extended the life on many pieces of classroom furniture by replacing and welding parts while also swapping between buildings to create complete classroom sets.

The district intends to replace classroom furniture sets with the 2026 bond.

The locker room will be configured to allow for more private shower and changing spaces.
